Construction on an expansion at the Vanderburgh County Jail is officially underway.
According to Sheriff Noah Robinson, the expansion will include an additional 170 beds.
Ten of these will be designated for a mental health unit and 32 for substance abuse rehabilitation.
In a Facebook post, Sheriff Robinson thanked County Commissioners and the County Council for the funding approval.
Citing it was much needed due to overcrowding.
The work is expected to be finished by the spring of 2026.
